Rematriation
Joe Campbell’s heroes had a thousand faces,
I search for goddesses with a thousand faces;
Inana, Isis, Ishtar, Aphrodite, Kuan Yin, Nuwa, Abuk, Demeter, Persephone,
words float to the surface as I float naked in my
morning tub, remembering that Zapotec woman, oppressed but cleansed and healed with bathing; dignity restored.
And while bathing, the thought emerges; that as we work to rewild, replant, and reinvent; and as we speak our experience as truth,
the final twist of the labyrinth, Ariadne’s gift, led by indigenous women, is
the gift of Rematriation.
